I wrote this piano solo using musical quotations from 6 different carols. Christmas carols are magical because hope, love, and appreciation are embedded in every carol. It is a good way to bring these qualities into one's day, any time. During my 10+ years as the director of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, I watched the kind members of its small congregation work tirelessly to secure food and funds for the local food pantry year after year. I began to understand the true significance of their yearly celebration of the birth of Christ. Through these 6 carols, the music conveys the spirit of Christmas: the anticipation, the joy, the sorrow, the adoration, and the inspiration for a life of compassion.

For the musically curious, some of the carol references are fleeting, and others more extensive. The lullaby in the middle is a Polish carol Lulajże Jezuniu which I came across during my 8 years of Chopin addiction. The last carol Good King Wenceslas talks about a King who goes out on a cold snowy night to give food to someone in need. His attendant had trouble negotiating the deep snow, cold wind, and low visibility. The King suggested his attendant follow his footprints in the snow. I like this carol because it gives me the inspiration to try to give something even when I don't feel too secure myself.
